Kahoot! The best platform for interaction!

Kahoot! is a very useful gamified interactive platform that can be used to apply tests or surveys. The testing features are perfect for teaching and teachers can set up competition games to motivate students and keep track of their learning at the same time. Now it is available as a free web version and as an application.

—— How to use ——

① Teachers register and log in via the web version of Kahoot, create their own project, choose the format of the interactive questions according to the needs of the activity and set the time limit for answering the questions.

②Post the Kahoot project in the classroom and the system will automatically generate a PIN code. Students will need to go to the webpage or application and enter the PIN code to join the game.

③When the game starts, the question and options will appear on the student's interface and the answer can be automatically judged as right or wrong and scored. At the end of the quiz time, the system will count the answers and publish the points. After all questions have been completed, the top five players on the leaderboard are displayed and awarded trophies.

 —— Kahoot for Ice-breaking ——

As well as providing classroom games and exercises, teachers can use Kahoot to create fun self-introductions. I have created the following Quiz based on my information.

——My comments——

  • Kahoot is a particular tool relevant to language learning. As a game, Kahoot is a great way to develop students' learning skills, especially for young learners and teenagers. Through Kahoot student participation is increased, lessons are fun and teacher-student interaction is enhanced. According to the constructivist theory, interaction can promote student learning. The constructivist theory is based on the view that learners are active participants in their learning, knowledge is constructed based on experiences. Everyone can reflect on their experience, and incorporate the new knowledge with previous knowledge. Kahoot is a great way to assist teachers in the transfer and processing of knowledge during the teaching process, allowing students to take the initiative in completing exercises.

  • Kahoot is very useful in the language classroom and I think it can be used not only for in-class quizzes but also to assist teachers in better lesson planning. The teacher can set questions based on the learning content during the lesson and test them quickly in class. The system comes with a statistics function that shows how well the questions have been answered. In other words, the student's mastery can feedback immediately to the teacher in class, which makes testing efficient. This is something that paper-based quizzes and assignments cannot achieve. At the same time, the data from each interaction can be downloaded and retained so that the teacher can adjust the content by checking the percentage of each question that is correct or incorrect. Other than that, what I like even more is the shared Quiz in the question bank. Many users have shared their Quiz on Kahoot, which is very informative about English words and grammar. For example, confusing words or grammatical knowledge are put together to test students' abilities, many of which cannot be fully considered by individuals alone, so Kahoot is also a great tool for sharing teaching experiences. Personally, I tend to use it with middle and high school students. They have some basic English and self-control and will not reject the Quiz approach to testing. It is also important to discipline students by keeping a tight rein on the use of electronics.

  • There are limitations to the implementation of Kahoot in the classroom. Firstly, there are requirements for network and participation devices. To adopt Kahoot, each student needs to have a mobile phone or computer, but whether students can use their phones in the classroom has been a highly controversial issue. Secondly, it requires self-control on the user. The rich animations and impactful colour palette are certainly a good means of raising interest, but they can also easily distract students, so teachers need to consider carefully who they use it with. Finally, although the app is available in other languages, when used in an English classroom, it requires a certain level of English language proficiency.

Log in now and have fun with Kahoot!

  2. Hi Leah

Thank you for your review on Kahoot!. You have a detailed comment on Kahoot!, which is very nice. It is a good tool indeed as the attractive interface and background music do attract young learners, thus they will be more engaged in their class. The statistics function in every applications are important as it allows teachers to check the score immediately from the application, which is very convenient for them as they always have a packed teaching schedule.

  3. Hi Leah, I like the point that you've seen the tool connecting to feedback for teachers. Test results would be feedback for teachers and help them keep up/adjust lesson plans, right? I agree with you that the static results immediately give teachers a hint where their learners stand. This is a very organised review. Good job!

  4. Hi Leah, I get the same idea as you that Kahoot is very suitable to be used for ice-breaking activities, but it may look impossible in Chinese middle school classes. Maybe university teachers could adopt it as a fun game and an assessment tool.
