An Option for Online English Learning , Practical and Free!๐Ÿ˜

The British Council's multimedia English learning website is a free English learning website set up by the British Council, one of the organisers of the IELTS exam. You can watch videos online, follow step-by-step instructions and practice your English.

You can find English Skills Training, Grammar, Vocabulary, Business English, General English and IELTS courses in the menu bar of the website.

Let's take listening as an example. First, you need to choose your level, which is divided into Elementary, Pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate and Advanced. The second step is to choose the course you prefer. The course provides not only the audio but also some tasks, in terms of vocabulary and comprehension of the audio. From my point of view, the listening content is relevant to daily life and can also be used as a suitable material to practise oral English. At the end of the exercises, there is often a discussion area for learners to comment, where you can see what others have shared and meet English learners from around the world.

In addition, you can find free videos and audios for all ages and all levels of learners, including games, football, mini-soaps, interviews and much more! If you want supervision and guidance, you can also pay for a membership.

The free resources and exercises throughout the site follow the teaching principles of PPP (Presentation, Practice and Production) and focus particularly on Presentation and Practice. Due to the wide range of content on the site, I think it is better suited as a teaching resource for teachers than learners. For younger English learners who cannot assess their English learning ability well and may not be able to choose the right materials. The best way to maximise the value of the resource is through teachers. Also, teachers should add a section focused on Production.

  1. Hi Leah, this tool seems highly useful and beneficial. Users can choose level and course, and even share their opinion in the end. As you've mentioned, it seems better for teachers to use it as young learners would be struggling choosing their level and course appropriately. Thank you for sharing good information!
