Have you heard of WebQuest before? WebQuest is a new concept that I have recently come across. "A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. WebQuests are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation."

Teachers can create their own WebQuest or search for existing WebQuests by limiting the topics, subjects and sections they can use.

Here is are some tutuorials of using WebQuest👇

Let's take a look at An English Holiday as an example of what you can find in a WebQuest!

Evaluations

The task is for students to work in small groups, and plan the ultimate trip to England by finding the cost of each activity, the food you will have to buy, your transportation, and hotels. Each student has their own work to complete by reading to find information

👍The group work increases interaction between students, cooperative learning and meaningful negotiation.

👍The tasks provide useful material sites covering history, art, etc. Students are expected to do budget calculations and itineraries in the process of completing the tasks, which are not just exercises for English classes but interdisciplinary learning

👎Although this WebQuest provides clear ideas and matched material, most of these links are no longer available, which is needed to be updated.

👎The division of tasks between students is clear but the amount of work is uneven, with some students needing to read too much.

👎Most of the content produced by students is available from online searches and there is a lack of opportunity for students to think and explore on their own.

How to apply WebQuest in China?

Personally, I think WebQuest is better suited to serve interdisciplinary courses, that is, quality training that combines subjects such as mathematics, languages, history and geography. If it is only used in English classes, firstly there is no guarantee that every English skill will be covered, only one or two of them can be taken. Secondly, creating and planning WebQuest takes a lot of teacher effort and time and requires collaboration between teachers. To actually apply WebQuest in Chinese classrooms, it still requires a change in teachers' and students' perceptions of the teaching method, which can be used as an initial practice of the TBLT teaching model.
